The Power of Decision-Making for Black Women in Leadership

align framework black women leadership decision-making essence of ujima program workforce wednesday Mar 18, 2025

Leadership is more than holding a title—it’s about making the right decisions in the moments that matter most. Yet, for Black women navigating corporate spaces, entrepreneurship, and community leadership, decision-making is often layered with systemic barriers, unseen biases, and higher stakes.

At Essence of Ujima, we center collective work and responsibility, ensuring Black women have the tools, frameworks, and sisterhood needed to lead with confidence. This week’s Workforce Wednesday is dedicated to Decision-Making in Complex Structures, a key theme from our latest leadership coaching session.

The Invisible Weight of Decision-Making for Black Women

For many professionals, leadership decisions are about strategy, logistics, and impact. But for Black women in leadership, decision-making often comes with extra layers of consideration:

✅ Will my decision be questioned because of who I am?
✅ Am I being set up to be the "fixer" or the scapegoat?
✅ How do I balance my core values with corporate expectations?
✅ If I fail, will there be another opportunity?

The research is clear: Black women leaders are more likely to face scrutiny for their decisions, less likely to receive mentorship, and are often expected to be everything to everyone—the voice of diversity, the mediator, the problem-solver. This is the silent tax of leadership that is rarely talked about.

But here’s the truth: Every great leader must make hard decisions. And with the right tools, Black women can make strategic, values-aligned choices that propel their careers and communities forward.

The ALIGN Framework: A Decision-Making Model for Black Women Leaders

In our coaching sessions, we introduce the ALIGN Framework, a powerful approach to making clear, confident decisions:

A → Who or what is Affected by this decision? Identify individuals, teams, systems, or processes that will feel the impact of your choice.
L → Is there a Law, policy, or rule that can guide me? Look for organizational policies, industry standards, or ethical guidelines that inform the decision.
I → What Insights or lessons can I draw from past experiences? Reflect on relevant successes or challenges you or your team have faced.
G → What does my Gut tell me? Trust your instincts while balancing them with the other steps in the framework.
N → What is the Next best step to achieve my desired outcome? Define a clear, actionable step that aligns with your leadership goals and values.

By using ALIGN, leaders move past analysis paralysis and fear of failure, instead making empowered, values-driven choices.

One of our recent participants shared:
"I used to overthink every decision, fearing I’d make the wrong move. Now, I use ALIGN to ensure I stay true to my mission—without second-guessing myself."

Sisterhood in Decision-Making: Why Black Women Need Collective Leadership Spaces

While tools like ALIGN are essential, Black women should never have to navigate leadership in isolation. Spaces like Essence of Ujima provide:

When Black women have access to community, mentorship, and leadership frameworks, their decision-making transforms—not just for their careers, but for the generations following in their footsteps.
